Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

Burleigh Heads State School is a proud participant in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.

Excerpt from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden website regarding the program is: “Children around the country are getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food.

The Program began in 2001, and has since steadily and successfully been rolled out in 297 primary schools across all states and territories of Australia.

Kitchen Garden Schools flourish in all types of communities, climates and settings. Each school brings the wide-ranging benefits of pleasurable food education to its students and surrounding families. Each builds invaluable knowledge and understanding of food and of the integral role it plays in our physical and social wellbeing. Each plants the seeds for a lifetime of positive eating habits and enjoyment of food.

We want to bring good food into the curriculum and culture of every school; to feed the minds, bodies and futures of each and every student.

Kitchen Garden Schools commit to a dynamic and innovative model that sees kitchen and garden classes run weekly, enabling skills-based learning that extends across the entire school curriculum.

As participants in the Kitchen Garden Program, eight to twelve year-old children spend time in a productive veggie garden and home-style kitchen each and every week. There they learn skills that will last them a lifetime, and discover just how much fun it is to grow and cook their own seasonal vegetables and fruits.”
