Special education program

The Special Education Program at Burleigh Heads State School provides support for children who have a diagnosed disability.  This specifically includes the following:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Intellectual Disability (ID)
  • Physical Impairment (PI)
  • Visual Impairment (VI)
  • Hearing Impairment (HI)
  • Speech Language Impairment (SLI)

The goals for all of our students, is that they will be successful and happy members of our school community and that they will develop to their fullest potential.  These children are in their mainstream classes and our specialist staff, provide support depending on their individual needs.

Our specialist staff, provide a wide range of support depending upon their individual needs.  This may include support in their mainstream class, withdrawal support for individual work and small group work.  They assist teachers in management strategies and in the modification and preparation of resources.

Our children are provided with additional support during lunch breaks, school excursions and are encouraged to participate in all school activities.

Individual Programs that we offer include:

  • Community access
  • Motor skills
  • Social skills
  • Speech language
  • Transition
  • Intensive swimming
  • Yoga
  • Surf safety

Students may also be invited to participate in:

  • Annual Eisteddfod
  • Annual Athletics Carnival

All programs are based on the educational needs of individual students and these needs are discussed every six months with all involved personnel and parents.  From these discussions an Individual Education Plan or where applicable and Individual Support Plan is developed an implemented by the relevant team members.​
